Colour in weaving is not simply a matter of choosing yarn. In flat
weave, colour is structural — it is built row by row through the
interlacement of weft threads, and the techniques used to place,
transition, and combine those threads determine how colour reads
on the surface. The same two yarns can produce a crisp stripe, a
soft gradient, or an optical blend, depending entirely on how they
are woven.

In this third volume, developed in collaboration with Inner World
Studio, Moe Kim, textile designer and founder of Moe Kim Textile
Studio, guides you through the essential colour techniques of flat
weave — from simple striping to hatching, hachure, and vertical
gradation. Her practice brings together technical precision and an
experimental approach to material, exploring how structure and
colour can work together to create contemporary textile work.
This masterclass begins with a short introduction to the history
of colour in weaving — tracing how different cultures have used
these techniques across time and geography, from Pre-Columbian
Andean tapestry to the ateliers of Flemish and French weavers. You
will then move to the loom, where you will work through the core
colour techniques step by step, building your own woven sample as
you go.

The warp will be set in cotton, providing a stable and consistent
base. The weft will draw from a varied selection of wool yarns —
different types, textures, and finishes — allowing you to explore how
the particular qualities of wool interact with colour technique, and
how each yarn affects the way colour reads on the surface.
No prior experience with colour techniques is required, though
a basic familiarity with weaving is helpful. All materials will
be provided, and you will leave with your finished sample and
a practical understanding of colour in weaving to continue
developing at home.
