Weaving is one of the oldest textile techniques in human history, with
origins dating back over 27,000 years. Across cultures and continents,
it has shaped the way we create cloth and engage with materials in our
everyday lives.
In this introductory workshop, Moe Kim, textile designer and founder
of Moe Kim Textile Studio, invites you to explore weaving as both a
traditional craft and a contemporary design language. Her practice
combines traditional weaving techniques with experimental material
approaches to create modern textile works.
This masterclass begins with a short introduction to textiles and
the history of weaving. You will then explore basic textile structures
through hands-on paper weaving exercises, allowing you to understand
structure and composition in a simple and accessible way.
We then move onto a weaving frame, where you will learn three
foundational binding techniques (plain weave, basket weave, twill
weave). Through these processes, you will gradually build your own
woven sample and complete a small coaster.
In this workshop, the warp will be made from cotton, a strong and
stable fibre that holds tension well, making it especially suitable for
beginners. The weft will use mohair, one of Moe’s signature materials,
valued for its soft, diffused quality that evokes a subtle sense of
nostalgia. When brushed, the fibres open up to create a fluffy,
voluminous texture, adding depth and softness to the final piece.
The workshop is designed for beginners, and no prior experience is
required. All materials will be provided, and participants will leave with
their finished woven piece along with a foundational understanding of
weaving techniques to continue exploring at home.
